Thirty Super Late Models entered the program, and after qualifying ninth fastest Eric finished fourth in his heat race to lock into the twelfth starting spot for the 50 lap finale. During the race's early stages Wells raced in the top ten before working his way into the fourth position late in the event. It appeared that he was on his way to a fourth place finish, before disaster struck for the lead trio with just three laps remaining as leader, Josh Richards, made contact with a lap car. A melee ensued, which collected Richards, Rick Eckert, and Scott James. With the top three involved in an accident Eric inherited the lead and went on to lead the final three laps to claim the win, which came over Darrell Lanigan, Tim McCreadie, Tyler Reddick, and Tim Fuller. "We had a pretty good car from the drop of the green," said Wells, who earned a career-high paycheck of $10,800. "I don't think I had the car to win if not for the misfortune of (the top three), but sometimes you gotta have luck on your side and tonight we did. I couldn't be any happier to win a World of Outlaws race this early in our first season (as a regular)." With the win Wells is now sixth in the latest tour standings, and continues to lead the way in the WoO Rookie standings. Thirty-five Super Late Models registered for competition, and Eric's night began on a sour note as the team discovered a broken fuel pump, while warming the engine for hot laps. As a result as a precautionary measure the back-up car was unloaded. Despite having no laps on the car Wells registered the seventh fastest time in his group to earn the fourth starting spot for the first heat race. He went on to finish third in his heat to lock into the eleventh starting spot for the 50 lap feature. Unfortunately Eric's bad luck would not be over as he slowed on lap 18 with mechanical issues that sidelined him to a 23rd place finish in the final rundown. As a result the team entered a single event over the weekend as they traveled to 311 Motor Speedway (Pine Hall, North Carolina) for a $10,000-to-win, WoO event. With twenty-nine Super Late Models on hand Eric earned the twentieth starting spot for the feature via preliminary action. During the course of the feature he advanced nine spots on his way to an eleventh place finish. Eric is currently sixth in the latest WoO standings and continues to lead the rookie of the year standings with the series. Friday evening found the team traveling to Paducah International Raceway (Paducah, Kentucky) for a $20,000-to-win event at the lightning-fast, 3/8 mile oval. Heavy rain from the day prior left the track heavy and rough, and after racing to the win in his heat race Wells locked into the 75 lap main event in the fourth position. Early in the feature he slipped back in the pack to as far as the eleventh position before mounting a late-race charge to the front of the pack. Unfortunately with less than 20 laps left he had a tire go flat, which did considerable damage to the brake assembly, forcing him to retire from the event to a thirteenth place finish. On Saturday evening the action shifted to Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 (Pevely, Missouri) for another $20,000-to-win event as once again a stacked field of fifty Super Late Models registered for action. After finishing one spot out of a transfer in his heat race Wells mounted a great charge in his b-main to claim the second and final transfer spot in the second b-main, which locked him into the twenty-second starting spot for the 75 lap finale. In the feature he advanced a few spots early in the feature before slowing late in the race with mechanical issues as he retired to a seventeenth place finish. During the course of the 100 lap finale Wells advanced six spots on his way to an eleventh place finish at the checkered flag. Eric is currently seventh in the latest WoO standings and leads the rookie of the year standings. Full results from the event and complete series' standings are available at www.WoOLMS.com. |
